How To Prepare Before Going to Market
Sales profession is a very demanding profession. The very survival of most of companies is dependent on the revenues that the sales dept of that company generates. Sales numbers are the most visible and measurable performance metrics and because of this very easy visibility of sales numbers, the sales people are always under a lot of stress to meet their month targets.
To achieve sales targets, the sales professionals have to visit different markets to develop those markets and develop sales, distribution, and visibility of their products/services in the markets.
They are always time pressed and time management is a constant challenge for them what with people from different departments calling them for their own reasons. Sales professionals have to juggle many demands in their time and to top it all, they have to keep people from different departments in good humor. Add to it the pressure of achieving month sales targets in today’s competitive environment and you can well imagine the pressure cooker situation of sales professionals.
To help sales professionals manage their activities before they leave their home for visiting market to do their job, today we will explore some of things which the sales professionals must do before leaving home/hotel for their performing their duties.
1. Wake up Early:
Wake up early in the morning, if not by 5 pm then, latest by 6am. Sit on your bed at least for two three minutes to gather your senses.
Spend at least twenty minutes doing mild exercises of legs, arms, hands as per your capacity. Small exercise on daily basis will help you keep in high spirits right from the moment you get out of bed.
Drink at least one glass full of water. Then after performing other daily bodily rituals take bath.
Consume one glass of water after bath to keep your blood pressure (BP) in great shape as pressure of sales targets takes the greatest toll on BP.
Have a full breakfast so that you can work happily with full tummy. In this profession only breakfast on time is assured as it is common for sales people to skip lunches in the wake of demands of their profession. Dinners are consumed late after returning from a tiring work day. So breakfast is the only luxury that you can have at your own comfort and with sufficient time.
2. Dress Well. Smell Awesome!
Now wear nice formal clothes to present yourself well in the market. Dressing well will help improve your self esteem which will come handy in dealing confidently with your customers.
Wear nice smelling perfume and/or body deo to ensure that you smell better to present a nice impression. Persons smelling better are natural attraction in all spheres of life. Wearing perfume can also keep bad body odors at bay again adding to your charisma.
Keep one set of face wash ,perfume and deo always in your working bag as you never know where you may need them to wear a presentable look after working for two three hours in market.
3. Keep your Working Kit spic and span:
Check your office bag to ensure daily sales report, product catalog, pop/pos, calculator, pen, pencil, diary, price list, company circulars, target sheet, and other stationery items are there in your bag to help you perform your duties. If there is anything missing then replenish those things in the working bag.
Leave you home with working bag. Never work without a working bag. Working bag is your identity and you never know where the contents of your working bag may come to your rescue during your sales call. Once you start treating your working bag as your trusted assistant than a mere weight on your body, then you will never keep your working bag away from you while working on your job.
4. Confirm Appointments:
Inform your distributor about the time by which you will reach his/her office and the market you will work on that day. (This will be a reconfirmation call as you must have informed about this visit either a day or a week before). Ask the Distributor to keep the information about sku wise stocks, slow moving skus etc ready and ,if possible SMS the same information to you to help plan that day's working. This reconfirmation of your meeting with Distributor will keep the Distributor charged and motivated to help you achieve your daily sales goal.
5. Set Day's Sales goal:
Keeping in mind your sales target for the month as well as sales target of the Distributor, you must set day's secondary as well primary sales target. You must try to set SKU wise sales targets for the day. This target setting will keep your Distributor charged for achieving his/her targets when he/she sees your planning and efforts. It is no secret that charged and motivated Distributors are asset for any sales professional and Company.
Setting day’s sales goals and achieving them goes a long way in demonstrating to the distributor your commitment to achieve your goals. Remember the old adage: “Actions speak louder than words”
These are some of the tips which I think can go a long way in setting the tone and mood for the working day ahead.
